Alexa Canady
Alexa Canady, born
in 1950, became at age 30 the
first black woman neurosurgeon in the United States.
She completed her medical studies at
the University of Michigan and has taught at the
University of Pennsylvania, the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and is
a clinical associate professor at
Wayne State University in Detroit. |

Barbara Jordan
Barbara Jordan
was elected to the Texas Senate in 1966,
the first black senator to serve in that body since 1883.
She was elected to the House of Representatives in 1972 and served for three
years, gaining public prominence during the Nixon impeachment hearings.
She began teaching at the University of
Texas in 1979. She died in 1996. |
