CHIMPANZEES


                    The three subspecies of chimpanzee occupy greatly  reduced     
                ranges in Central Africa. Chimpanzees are now extinct in four
                of the 25 countries 
                they once inhabited (Gambia, Burkina Faso, Togo and Benin). 

                Extinction is expected soon in Ghana,  Guinea-Bissau,  Nigeria,      
                Burundi     and   Rwanda.   Rough   estimates    place    overall  
                population between 100,000 and 200,000.

               
Threats:  Hunted  for  their  meat,  also  logging  is   destroying 
                habitat.
