The three subspecies of
chimpanzee occupy greatly reduced
ranges in Central Africa. Chimpanzees are now extinct in four
of the 25 countries
they once inhabited (Gambia, Burkina Faso, Togo and Benin).
Extinction is expected soon in Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria,
Burundi and Rwanda. Rough
estimates place overall
population between 100,000 and 200,000.
Threats: Hunted
for their meat, also logging is destroying
habitat.
